Jean DUFY (1888-1964)
Stockholm, le port (circa 1953-1954)

During this summer period, 2 days of sales were necessary to offer a rich catalogue of 1427 lots of quality wines.

Once again, a great opportunity for French and foreign wine lovers to acquire rare and magnificent bottles, mainly from several very knowledgeable private cellars. In addition to the splendid local cellars, the wines came from various regions of France such as the Grand-Est, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, not forgetting Paris and Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

In the Bordeaux region, we found the legendary Pomerol vintage, Petrus, in 20 vintages often housed in original wooden cases (6 bottles of 1988 sold for 13640€ - lot 1011, 6 of 1995 for 15500€ - lot 986, 3 of 2012 for 7810€ - lot 1103), as well as cases of 3 magnums of 1995 for 18600€ - lot 1045) and 2007 for 15000€ - 1102), as well as numerous single bottles of great years.

In addition to the many cases of first growths classified in the region, the major references of the Médoc and Libourne regions were represented and accompanied the Caisses Bordeaux-Primeurs (12 from 1989 sold for 11780€ - lot 1001 and 12 from 1996 for 9920€ - lot 1002), Collection Duclot (9 bottles from 2005 for 11900€ - lot 1121) and the exceptional Carré d'As of 8 magnums (sold 34100€ - lot 1000).

Highly prized throughout the world, the best Burgundy wines were the object of all the covetousness with those of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (let us quote 1 bottle of Romanée-Conti from 2015 sold for 22320€ - lot 373, 2 rare bottles of 1990 for 39310€ - lots 300 and 987, 10 bottles of Romanée-Saint-Vivant for 12150€ - lot 400 and 2 Montrachet 2005 for 16120€ - lots 371 and 372, 1 bottle of 2014 for 8310€ - lot 1250) among the 76 that were on display. We should also mention an incomplete set of 7 bottles (Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Echezeaux) for 23560€ - lot 904. Also of note was a bottle of 1999 Musigny from Domaine Georges Roumier which fetched 12400€ - lot 994. We also found the sublime Pinot Noirs from the Domaines Rousseau, Mugnier, Mortet and the Chardonnays from the Domaine d'Auvenay (3 bottles of Criots-Batard-Montrachet 2006 sold for 35835€ - lots 928 to 930) or those from the Domaines Leflaive, Lafon and Coche-Dury (numerous Corton-Charlemagne and Meursault-Perrières).

Great Rhône wines such as Château Rayas or Ermitage Cathelin de Chave (2 bottles from the 2000 vintage sold for 16865€ - lots 398 and 399), exceptional champagnes, fine foreign wines and old spirits (Saint-James 1885 rum) allowed everyone to find what they were looking for at any price!

On Sunday 15 August at 2.30 p.m., Maître Jean-Pierre Besch offered a very fine selection of paintings ranging from impressionists to contemporaries, but also sculptures, ceramics, 20th century decorative arts and old paintings. A meeting during which was presented a set of works from renowned artists. Among them : Jean Dufy (1888-1964)

A fan of bright colours, Jean Dufy showed a marked preference for blue, as shown by "Stockholm, the Port" (circa 1953-1954) (sold for 69000€ - Lot 130), oil on canvas signed lower left and "Calèches et cavaliers au bois de Boulogne" (circa 1950) (sold for 66500€ - Lot 161), oil on canvas signed lower right; two compositions in which, in the purest Fauvist style, the artist depicts stylised figures whose movements seem to give a sense of life to his canvases.

François-Xavier Lalanne (1927-2008), a major artist of the 20th century, is particularly renowned for his animal sculptures. An exceptional bestiary ranging from his famous sheep to wilder and even exotic animals such as the rhinoceros, which the artist likes to portray in a variety of guises, according to his aspirations, such as this "Blue Rhinoceros", a bronze with a blue enamelled patina, signed with the monogram, dated 1981 and numbered (sold for 56500€ - Lot 170).

Like Jean Dufy, Camille Corot (1796-1875) was a realist painter, trained in particular by Achille Etna Michallon, a landscape artist who passed on to him his taste for compositions painted in the open air; canvases whose subtle and delicate brushstrokes are above all intended to be a faithful reproduction of reality, such as these "Three Characters in the Marsh", (circa 1865-1870), oil on canvas signed in the lower right-hand corner. This approach to pictorial art led the artist to be one of the first to paint in this way, particularly around Barbizon, and to pass on his knowledge within the School of the same name, which he helped to found (sold for 46350€ - Lot 113).

In the context of this sale, let us mention the two-leaf Parement Doors, inspired by the doors of the Baptistery of Florence, by Fernand Bielle (1899-1975) which were sold for 72800€ (lot 96). The upper part of each door is adorned with an entablature chiseled in high relief of war scenes with numerous characters and 24 rectangular panels chiseled in the round with the main scenes of the life of Jesus Christ. The lintel bears the motto "IN VIA PACIS". The weight of the silver is about 120 kg, while the total gross weight is about 380 kg. This work was executed between 1940 and 1945 by Bielle, Goldsmith in Bayonne (240 x 162 cm).

A sale of fine wines and rare spirits, including a Carré d'As 2000 with 8 magnums (sold for 34100€) (expert Pascal Kuznieswki), preceded by a sale of high jewellery, signed jewels, diamonds, coloured stones and prestigious watches (expert Edouard De Garo) on 13 and 14 August at 10.30 am and 1.30 pm. Among the major pieces of this sale, it is worth noting an important "panther" bracelet by Ferret which obtained 30750€ (lot 138) on an estimate of 9/12000€. It is in white gold and can be transformed into a brooch with emerald eyes, the body being articulated and spotted with black enamel and entirely set with brilliant-cut diamonds.
