Press release - Easter auctions from April 16 to 18, 2022

VAN CLEEF & ARPELS
VAN CLEEF & ARPELS
Exceptional ring with a rectangular sapphire

The auction of April 17th will feature works by artists representing some of the main trends in Modern & Contemporary Art. Among the highlights of the sale is the work of Georges Mathieu (1921-2012).

Considered one of the fathers of lyrical abstraction, a pictorial movement linked to informal art and guided by the artist's emotion, Mathieu quickly found his way through an innovative style consisting of patches of colour directly from the tube and often crushed under his fingers or applied with long brushes. Favouring vivid colours, he creates compositions marked by vigour that bear witness to the rapid and precise gestures - sometimes carried out during performances - that give them life; as shown by this "Haine d'orgueil", an alkyd on canvas signed at the bottom left, titled on the back on the frame and dated 1988. A work that reflects the virtuosity and particularly accomplished technique of the artist.

Member of the École de Paris, Maurice Utrillo (1883-1955), one of the few famous painters from Montmartre who was born there, was in contact with the artistic milieu of the hilltop from an early age, as the son of the painter Suzanne Valadon, for whom he was one of the favourite models. A painter whose talent was quickly recognised, he was one of those who contributed to the cultural influence of the capital, a city he loved and represented on many occasions, as shown by "Avenue de Versailles and the Eiffel Tower", oil on canvas signed lower right, circa 1921.

Famous for his paintings, Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) was also a renowned engraver, ceramist and creator of fabrics and tapestries. A man of many talents who gave free rein to his creativity throughout his life, producing works marked by lightness and freshness, with landscapes surrounding Le Havre as his favourite theme; such as this tapestry entitled "Amphitrite à Sainte Adresse", in which the author associates the small Norman port with a character from Greek mythology.

Initially influenced by Neo-Impressionism, Jean Metzinger (1883-1956) later adopted a style marked by Fauvism and, from 1908, by Cubism, an artistic movement of which he was one of the theoreticians. However, always concerned with a certain respect for form and volume, he remained attached to traditional art, as shown by "Village under the Storm", oil on canvas signed at the bottom left and produced around 1920, or "Woman at the Window", oil on panel, circa 1935, signed at the bottom right.

Considered a true prodigy of French cabinet making, François Linke (1855-1946) stood out for the quality of his design and chiselling, which is sometimes compared to that of Gervais Durand. His work is of exceptional finesse, freely inspired by the Louis XV style but also by Art Nouveau, making him undoubtedly one of the greatest Parisian cabinetmakers of the 20th century. Mixing various materials such as precious woods, marble or bronze, his pieces are richly decorated with motifs, often floral, whose curves gracefully intertwine to give his sumptuously inlaid furniture a unique style. Such is the case of this remarkable chest of drawers with leaves, made after a model by Joseph Stöckel and Guillaume Benneman.

We should also mention Louis Valtat (1889-1952), Maurice Mendjisky (1889-1951), Jean Puy (1876-1960), Claude Venard (1913-1999), Alexandre Noll (1890-1970) and Olivier Debré (1920-1999), among others.

It is all these works and many others that the Besch Cannes Auction House will present during the prestige sale "From Impressionists to Contemporaries", bringing together, in addition to paintings, important sculptures, ceramics and tapestries, on Sunday April 17th at 2.30pm at the Hôtel Martinez in Cannes.

This event will be preceded, on Saturday April 16th at 10.30 am, then 1.30 pm, by a sale of fine wines and rare spirits (Expert Pascal Kuzniewski), including two superb Vintage 1945 Niepoort Ports, and followed, on Monday April 18th by a sale of important diamonds, high jewellery, signed jewels and coloured stones and prestigious watches (Expert Edouard Degaro). Thus, at 10.30 am, the sale will be exclusively dedicated to the dispersion of about 150 NEW AND NEVER WEARED JEWELRY; a selection of high-end pieces coming from the César jeweller's shop, an important jeweller's shop on the Croisette which closed its doors in 2000. This will be followed at 2.30 pm by the sale of jewellery, some of which bear prestigious signatures, including a Van Cleef & Arpels ring in platinum, set with a rectangular sapphire of 9.80 carats, as well as an important solitaire, also in platinum, and an elegant ring with a beautiful emerald in its centre, both signed Boucheron.
