Press Release - Auctions of August 15 & 16, 2020

Bernard BUFFET (1928-1999)
Bernard BUFFET (1928-1999)
"Fleurs sur fond vert, 1998"

On Saturday 15 August 2020, Besch Cannes Auction will offer, on the occasion of these summer sales, a new and beautiful selection of works of art. Among them are two paintings by Bernard Buffet (1928-1999), a painter with a recognizable style who favours contrasts marked with his famous black traits, obeying no rules other than his own. An instinctive and nervous painting that ranks him among the most talented artists of his time, as shown in Les «Fleurs sur fond vert», oil on canvas signed at the bottom left and dated 1998 at the bottom right. Also made by Bernard Buffet, the «Environs de Cher, le chêne vert en automne, Parc du château de Vieille-Ville, 1975», oil on canvas signed at the top right particularly interesting because of its quite unusual craftsmanship at the artist. A delicate painting whose curved lines are reminiscent of the style of classical painters to which he liked to refer. Let us also quote the oil on canvas «Portrait de Monsieur Hervé Ségard» that Buffet realized in 1955 and which is part of a series of about ten portraits of collectors that Bernard Buffet made in order to pay homage to them (they are not orders).

Favouring landscape representations, Jan Van Goyen (1596-1656) inscribed his name in the Golden Age of Dutch painting. Baroque-style paintings in which the sky - often partially obscured by clouds - occupies a large place, and which gives the canvas a feeling of breadth as shown by the «Estuaire de rivière avec bateaux naviguant et pêcheurs», parqueted panel, monogrammed and dated at the bottom right.

Also of baroque style, the paintings of Abel Grimmer (ca. 1570 - before 1619) also represented scenes of daily life but also freely inspired compositions of the Bible such as the «Adoration des mages», a circular panel signed and dated at the top right, “ABEL GRIMMER 1611”.

Bright colours and sharp lines, subjects seemingly drawn from ancient or mythological scenes, cartoons or dream worlds : this is the universe of Robert Combas (born 1957), co-founder and leader of free figuration in Europe; an artistic movement where creative freedom is paramount. Using every inch of his painting, he fills it with characters whose movements seem to give life to the canvas. Creatures whose gaze occupies a central place in his work so much so that they seem to take the spectator to witness, as for «C’est ta Faute», acrylic on canvas signed and dated from 2002 in the top right.

Considered a post-impressionist, Henri Lebasque (1865-1937) produces paintings of great freshness where the pastel colors highlight the landscapes, (especially the countryside), but also the banks of rivers and sea that he loves. Attentive observer of the simple moments of life, his paintings reflect a feeling of softness to which the women, -subject whom he particularly appreciates- are not strangers, as in this "Véranda sur la plage de Cannes ou le bar de la plage", oil on canvas signed bottom left.

He too was a fan of outdoor painting, Charles Camoin (1879-1965) followed a classical education (he was a student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and trained, as Gustave Moreau had advised him, to copy the great masters of the Louvre), before being influenced by Matisse and Marquet and adhering to fauvism. A painter who, however, prefers softer shades than many other fauves and gives particular interest to the harmony of the painting as shown in this «Mas, environs de Saint Tropez», oil on canvas signed in the bottom left.

Works by Edouard Vuillard (1868-1940), Paul Signac (1863-1935), Armand Guillaumin (1841-1927), Marie Laurencin (1883-1956), Walasse Ting (1929-2010) will complete this part. The decorative arts will be particularly well represented with a «Fougères» perfume bottle, a rare model by René Lalique made of white glass and always by Lalique, a rare necklace "Fleurs et Rinceaux" composed of 12 "electric" blue glass motifs, model created in 1914 and removed from catalog in 1932.

These are all works of art that Maître Jean-Pierre Besch will present during a prestigious sale of old, modern paintings, contemporary art and decorative arts that will take place on Saturday, August 15, 2020 at 2.30 pm at the Palm Beach in Cannes.

The Sales House will also organize, on Sunday, August 16 at 1.30 pm a a sale of luxury leather goods followed at 2pm by the highly anticipated sale of high jewellery and diamonds with, among others, two pieces signed GRAFF, an exceptional radiant diamond of intense fancy yellow color weighing 9,32 cts and SI1 purity mounted on a platinum and gold ring (120000/180000€) and a platinum and gold pendant holding a fancy yellow light diamond weighing 4,46 cts. Let us also mention a superb dome-shaped ring signed Van Cleef & Arpels, one of the great names of the world jewellery whose incomparable know-how remains a reference to nowhere else. The day will end by a night auction starting at 8pm and dedicated to watches.
