JEAN MARAIS (1913-1998)

Superstar of the seventh art, Jean Marais will have, during his more than sixty years of career, played in nearly a hundred films and shot under the direction of the greatest. From Sacha Guitry («Napoléon», «Si Versailles m 'était conté...») to Jean Renoir («Helena et les hommes») by way of his friend and mentor Jean Cocteau who will launch his career and direct him on works as mythical as «La belle et la bête», «L 'aigle à deux têtes» or «Orpheus», he will embody, for several generations, the timeless masculinity, thus becoming one of the most emblematic French actors of the twentieth century.

Man of theatre, director and writer, he seems to have all the talents. In the early seventies, he discovered Vallauris, a charming town in the south of France bordered by the Gulf of Juan and a world-renowned pottery centre. Initiated to this art by Picasso himself, he soon formed himself with Jo Pasquali and his wife Nini who became his friends, and later on, his sole heirs.

As a breath of fresh air, this meeting will mark the beginning of a second life for the actor, the artist now dividing his time between his old theatrical loves and his new passion for which he will use his talents as a draughtsman and sculptor to make plays which, as a return to the sources, will long be inspired by the works of Cocteau. Great collector, he also surrounds himself with carefully chosen pieces made by renowned artists such as Pietro Calvi (and others to quote). A collection of works that have, for years, accompanied the actor and that still bear his footprint.
