The Besch Cannes Auction House is honoured to have been chosen to present an iconic work by Keith Haring (1958-1990) and Angel Ortiz (LA II), born in 1967, at its traditional summer sale. It is with great pride that he wishes to share this exceptional piece with the public, convinced of its artistic and symbolic value. Its confidence in this unique collaboration reflects its commitment to highlighting works that embody both tradition and innovation, offering enthusiasts and collectors a rare opportunity to acquire a modern masterpiece (estimated value 100000/150000€).
Keith Haring and Angel Ortiz, also known as ‘LA II’, collaborated as part of the urban art movement of the 1980s, blending street art and contemporary art. Their collaboration brought together Haring's distinctive style with Ortiz's creative energy, strengthening their influence in street art and the New York art scene of the time. In 1984, they jointly created a work entitled "Fiorucci Walls", which was part of an art project designed to decorate the façade of Fiorucci stores in Milan. This work reflects their shared desire to merge graphic art and popular culture, using dynamic shapes and bright colours to capture the energy of the city. Their collaboration illustrates the intersection between street art and the traditional art world, contributing to the recognition of graffiti as an art form in its own right, as illustrated by this spray-painted panel entitled "Untitled, 1984", which will be presented on August 15.
As part of this sale, renowned artists will also be featured in a decidedly eclectic style but with a common interest in light and colour, whether in Impressionism (Renoir (1841-1919) and Guillaumin (1841-1927)), Fauvism (Camoin (1879-1965) and Dufy (1879-1965)), Orientalism with Preziosi (1816-1882), figurative art with Marie Laurencin (1883-1956), who celebrates eternal femininity in "Portrait of a Woman with a Scarf on her Shoulder", Cubism with Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) and the spiritual expressionism of Georges Rouault (1871-1958), notably with an oil on paper mounted on canvas entitled "The Way of Calvary, also known as the Way of the Cross, 1939". Expressionism is also present in the work of Bernard Buffet, whose paintings, often marked by a profound melancholy, also addressed religious themes, as illustrated by this oil on canvas entitled "La Chapelle" (The Chapel), dated 1997. This work is part of a series in which the artist painted several chapels, notably inspired by his surroundings in Tourtour, a village in the Var region. In 1997, Buffet, already severely affected by Parkinson's disease, painted several variations of chapels : some in ruins and others majestic, such as the one we are presenting here.
This summer event at the Hôtel Martinez in Cannes will once again offer wine enthusiasts the opportunity to acquire magnificent bottles offered by Besch Cannes Auction and appraised by Pascal Kuzniewski, including numerous lots from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, on August 13 and 14. The grands crus classés of Bordeaux will be available in cases and individually (Petrus, Le Pin, Mouton Rothschild, Latour, Margaux, Cheval Blanc, Haut-Brion, Yquem, etc.), not to mention rare spirits, including a blend of several vintages of Chartreuse Tarragone Jaune (1906, 1910, 1920, 1930, 1948, 1951, 1961, 1967, 1973, 1980) : this cuvée, released in 2007, was produced jointly by the Carthusian monks and Olivier Poussier (World's Best Sommelier 2000).
The final auction, on August 16, will be devoted to the sale of important diamonds, fine jewellery and designer jewellery, and prestige watches (Expert Edouard de Garo).
