LILIUMS ET FLEURS ROSES II, 1978
This summer event at the Hôtel Martinez in Cannes will once again take place, on August Thursday 13th and Friday 14th, an opportunity for fine wine enthusiasts to acquire magnificent bottles offered by Besch Cannes Auction and appraised by Pascal Kuzniewski, with numerous lots from the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, including a selection of 11 bottles from the 2012 vintage. Burgundy enthusiasts will also find a remarkable selection of bottles from the Domaine d’Auvenay. Bordeaux’s grands crus classés will also be on offer, both by the case and individually, not to mention rare spirits.
On August Saturday 15th, the Arts Passion auction will showcase modern paintings, contemporary art, decorative arts, Asian art, leather goods and photographs. Among the highlights are two paintings by Bernard Buffet (1928–1999), a leading figure in 20th-century French painting. In ‘Liliums et fleurs roses II’, the artist explores the floral theme with his characteristic expressive power. His powerful and instantly recognisable black line gives structure to the composition and lends this bouquet its full intensity. Painted twenty years later, the oil on canvas ‘Bernay, Eure’ – one of his final landscapes – expresses a more contemplative approach to nature, where the precision of the drawing emphasises the full power of the composition.
Lovers of landscape art will rediscover all the poetry of Eugène Boudin (1824–1898) in ‘Plougastel, the Ferry Crossing, circa 1870–1873’, a work bathed in Breton light that already foreshadows Impressionism. Félix Ziem (1821–1911), for his part, captures the liveliness and reflections of ‘The Old Port of Marseille and the Tower of Saint-Jean’, whilst Armand Guillaumin (1841–1927) brings the colours to life in ‘Bathers at Crozant’, one of the most iconic subjects in his oeuvre. With his ‘Rural Scene in Montmartre’, Maximilien Luce (1858–1941) depicts a peaceful countryside on the outskirts of Paris, whilst Henri Martin (1860–1943), in his ‘Hilly Landscape with Two Maritime Pines’, presents a luminous natural scene where touches of colour create a serene atmosphere. Portraits of women feature prominently. Francis Picabia (1879–1953) presents ‘Barcelona (Spanish), circa 1922–23’, a watercolour and ink on paper of great delicacy, whilst the ‘Portrait of a Young Woman’, attributed to Eugeniusz Zak (1884–1926), captivates with its elegance and gentleness.
More expressive, the work by Antonio Saura (1930–1998), Galeria de Papel/Imaginary Portrait of Philip II, reinterprets the classical portrait with remarkable visual power. This modernity continues with the gestural abstraction P1967-A48, 1967 by Hans Hartung (1904–1989), whose energetic brushstrokes are the very essence of the work’s power, and with Hervé Di Rosa (born 1959), a leading figure of Figuration Libre, whose monumental composition 20,000 Foe, 84 unfolds a colourful and resolutely contemporary world. Asia is also in the spotlight with a delicate ‘Floral Composition’ by Lê Phô (1907–2001). ‘Floral Composition’, a central theme in his work, is rendered with infinite finesse on silk, in a harmonious dialogue between Vietnamese tradition and Western influence. This section devoted to Asian art is complemented by a pair of large 19th-century Chinese vases in the gourd-shaped ‘Bianhu’ style, set on 19th-century bronze pedestals with cloisonné enamels, decorated with blooming flowers, foliage and a phoenix with outstretched wings.
Finally, an elegant 32 cm Hermès Kelly bag in blue Courchevel calfskin – one of the House’s iconic designs – will complete this ensemble.
On August Sunday 16th, as part of the auction dedicated to major diamonds, designer jewellery and haute joaillerie – true icons of prestige – ‘a story of fashion… and taste’ will unfold around two exceptional brooches: two special commissions by Cartier, from a remarkable provenance. These two Cartier brooches, which have never before been offered at auction, will thus be unveiled to the public. From the estate of Madame Claire Yvonne Tricoche, née Frêne – an iconic muse and model for the couturier Jean Patou in the 1930s – they bear witness to the unique dialogue between haute couture and fine jewellery. These two special commissions, created by Cartier around 1940, have remained in the same family since their creation and are accompanied by an IAJA certificate of authenticity; they exemplify the Maison’s exceptional craftsmanship.
The first, an elegant platinum foliage brooch set with approximately 5.50 carats of diamonds, showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of Cartier’s jewellery. The second, a spectacular yellow gold and platinum nightingale brooch, pavé-set with diamonds and accented with rubies, poetically embodies the animal-inspired world so dear to the House of Cartier. True masterpieces of the late Art Deco period and the 1940s, these two exceptional creations combine prestigious provenance, rarity and excellence of craftsmanship. They are undoubtedly the centrepieces of this prestigious auction and offer collectors a unique opportunity to acquire two pieces that bear witness to the history of French jewellery.
