After the great success of the auction of July 20, this new day of summer wine sales gave once again the opportunity for French and foreign amateurs to acquire rare and magnificent bottles, mainly from several cellars of very knowledgeable individuals.

In addition to beautiful regional cellars, the wines came from different regions of France such as Occitanie, Grand-Est, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.

In the Bordeaux area, we found Petrus, the legendary wine of Pomerol, represented on many vintages (1 bottle from 1989 sold 4090 € - lot 540 and 1 bottle from 1990 for 4340 € - lot 541) and the major classified wines of the region including 12 bottles of Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1986 for 8680 € - lot 16, 3 bottles of Château Mouton Rothschild 2000 for 5085 € - lot 417 and 1 bottle of La Tâche 1997 for 3100 € - lot 24. Several cases of Château Margaux were offered (12 bottles of the 1990 vintage sold 11532 € - lot 533, 12 bottles of 1995 for 5580 € - lot 534). Some «Prestige» boxes were also the subject of beautiful auctions (let us mention lot 13 with 12 bottles of the 2004 vintage sold 7690 €, lot 635 with 9 bottles of 2008 for 5705 € or lot 527 with 9 bottles of the 1998 vintage for 6945 € - lot 527). The large sizes were also offered with 3 double-magnums of Château Cheval Blanc from 2006 for 8060 € - lot 714, 3 magnums of Château Margaux from 2006 for 2915 € - lot 718, 2 magnums of Château Margaux from 1982 for 3225 € - lot 718 lot 44, 3 magnums of Haut-Brion 2003 for 2480 € – lot 408 and 3 magnums of Château Mouton Rothschild from 2003 for 2480 € - lot 410.

Very popular currently around the world, the best wines from Burgundy have been the subject of many covets with those of the Domaine Leroy (1 bottle of the rare Musigny 2005 sold 28520 € - lot 500, 1 bottle of Chambertin 2008 for 6820 € - lot 498 and 1 bottle of Richebourg 2002 for 5580 € - lot 501), of the Romanée-Conti (1 bottle of 1963 for 5580 € - lot 495) and confidential domains Henri Jayer (2 bottles of Vosne-Romanée Cros-Parantoux 1993 for 34100 € - lots 359 and 360), Roumier (1 bottle of Chambolle-Musigny Amoureuses 2005 sold 3595 € - lot 193), Rousseau, Leflaive, Clair-Daü (1 magnum Bonnes-Mares from 1966 for 4960 € - lot 318, 4 bottles from 1978 for 6075 € - lot 319) and Domaine Ponsot (1 magnum of Clos de la Roche vieilles vignes of 1980 for 11160€ - lot 184).

Is our panel identical to these two works the preparatory work of these two pieces?

The size of this one is powerful and strong, it has many similarities with other panels in high relief carved wood of Ivan Mestrovic that will mark the European and American career of this sculptor. Rodin called him "the greatest sculptor of all time".

Sold : 50 200 € - Lot 319

IVAN MESTROVIC (1883-1962) is a major sculptor of 20th century art history, he is also a politician and a writer. He studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. This romantic artist was first influenced by Michelangelo. From 1908 he was Rodin’s pupil and frequented Bourdelle.

His work first related to the secessionist and then expressionist style is essentially composed of figurative sculptures in direct marble or wood sizes. He composed various monumental pieces for Zagreb, Paris and Chicago. In Split, in 1931, he designed with the architects Harold Bilinic and Lavoslav Horvat a neoclassical villa decorated with mythological characters including "woman with the harp", the latter reproducing one of the panels located on the ionic portico of the villa.

1989-2019 : Success for the anniversary auction

After the sale of fine wines and rare spirits on July 20, Maître Jean-Pierre Besch invited us, on August 15, at the anniversary sale «30 years of passion and sales of prestige» with notably a bronze with green patina «Cercle, 2009» of the Italian sculptor Bruno ROMEDA (1933-2017) which flew to 100400€ on an estimate of 19000/22000€ - lot 253 bis.

Another major piece, an important panel sculpted in high relief «La Femme à la Harpe» in a block of wood of a single panel attributed to Ivan MESTROVIC (1883-1962), internationally renowned artist whose Rodin will tell of him that he is “the greatest sculptor of all time”. It was acquired for an amount of 50200€ - lot 319.

Belonging to the realistic movement, Henri Fantin-Latour (1836-1904) was, from an early age, initiated to painting by his father, himself a talented painter. His fine and delicate brush stroke, as well as the choice of his colors, always respectful of the subject, made the poet and literary critic Gustave Kahn say that he is «the link that unites the painters of today with the romantic painting». So it is with his «Bathers», oil on canvas signed "Fantin" in the bottom right which were sold 37650 € - lot 220.

Fans of landscape representations, Eugène Boudin (1824-1898) and Paul Signac (1863-1935) were present thanks respectively to “Bordeaux, le port vers 1874-76” (sold 56475 € - lot 216) and watercolour “Genoa, the lantern, 1908” (sold for 41415€ - lot 262). Another painting by Boudin «La rivière du Faon en Bretagne, 1872» obtained 43925€ - lot 215.

Student of Charles Lhuillier, Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) here directs a «Harlequin à la Lyre», a gouache and watercolor signed on the bottom right (sold 50200€ - lot 205). In turn impressionist and then fauvist, he then evolves to a cubism of Cezannian style and remains, still today, an artist particularly sought after by collectors.

Let us mention a bronze piece by the Lalanne couple. Claude (1925-2019) and François-Xavier Lalanne (1927-2008) are world-renowned for their beauty and originality, and have been able to form a united couple for more than fifty years, both personally and professionally. A complementarity thanks to which they will create pieces of very beautiful bills because, if François-Xavier does not hide his inclination for the animal world, Claude chooses to give his preference to plants. A mixture of genres thanks to which beautiful creations were born, such as the «Main de Roman», bronze signed and numbered EA3/4, dated 1993 which was sold at 35140 € - lot 192.

Let us remain in the plant topic with a still life "Anémone, 1907" by Édouard Vuillard (1868-1940) (sold 62750€ - lot 240), a theme to which this intimate painter, witness of the sweetness of everyday life, is interested from his formative years.

The furniture Art Deco and glassware 1900 was also in the spotlight in Cannes with large signatures such as the Master glassmaker René LALIQUE (1860-1945) who put his talent and creativity at the service of pieces such as vases, candlesticks, clocks, in a traditional style but also more original works, such as this rare bottle «Bouchon cassis» with barrel-shaped body and small collar with brown/orange enamelled bands (sold 40150€ - lot 321).

The Asian Arts were also in the spotlight with two Chinese boxes from the Qianlong period (1736-1795), one in the shape of a three-colour lacquer ingot, red, green and yellow (sold for 42040€ - Lot 354) and the other in a four-lobed shape in a two-letter carved red lacquer (sold for 23215€ - lot 355).

All these works and many others that BESCH CANNES AUCTION presented on Thursday 15 August 2019 at the Hotel Martinez in Cannes. An appointment that was preceded, on Wednesday, August 14, by a sale of Fine Wines & Rare Spirits, with notably a set of 6 bottles of the Domaine Leroy (sold 52575€ - lot 498 to 503) and followed, on Friday, August 16, by a sale of important jewellery, signed jewelry & artists, diamonds, colored stones including a pair of «Drop» earrings from Fred Paris (sold 33885€ - lot 155) and modern & collector watches.
