Press release - Auctions of December 2019

Francis PICABIA (1879-1953)
Francis PICABIA (1879-1953)
Sans titre (Espagnole), circa 1925-1927

This end of year 2019 looks particularly attractive with the second edition of the sale 100% Champagne, Chartreuses & Spirits (on December 27th at 2 pm) followed by two days of high-quality sales dedicated to the dispersion of several magnificent private cellars of great amateurs where will figure the most prestigious nectars of Burgundy and Bordeaux essentially (28 and 29 December at 10.30 am, then 2 p.m.).

Since 1989, the sale of December 30 (2.30 pm) is dedicated to paintings and sculptures «from impressionists to contemporaries», thus browsing various artistic currents with notably a work by Francis Picabia (1879-1953), a Dadaist painter – an ephemeral movement he helped to create – whose inimitable design is firmly anchored in modernism. This pencil, ink and watercolor on marouflé paper "Sans titre (Espagnole)" which he made around 1925-1927 was exhibited at the Revillagigedo Palace, International Center of Art of Gijón in Spain from October 31 to December 31, 1991.

In a totally different style, the oil on panel "Anvers, Trois-mâts à quai", 1871 by Eugène BOUDIN (1824-1898) should also arouse a keen interest among international collectors. Considered as one of the greatest Norman painters and one of the precursors of impressionism, Boudin interprets nature in compositions that are always wonderfully balanced, as illustrated by this painting, which was exhibited at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris during the exhibition of Eugène Boudin’s works in January 1899.

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) offers us here a beautiful "Owl", a vase in white earthenware, Madoura edition, decorated with brown and black slip engraved with the mirette. This painter whose work is so powerful that it cannot leave indifferent has succeeded in imposing itself by his incomparable style, creating with Georges Braque, a movement that revolutionized pictorial art : cubism, an influence that is also touched up in this work numbered 59/500. Let’s go now to the discovery of the animal universe of Roger GODCHAUX (1878-1958) with a bronze with brown patina «Lionne aux aguets», signed on the terrace and bearing the stamp of the founder "Susse Frs Edts Paris» / Cire perdue.

Armand Guillaumin (1841-1927) shows, through the oil on canvas "Le Puy Barriou et la vallée de la Creuse" circa 1910, an exceptional talent of draftsman and colorist combined with such a personal use of color. One finds in the artist a subtlety in the choice of colors, a mastery in the treatment of the subject and a total agreement between the atmosphere and the treated theme. Lovers of Marie Laurencin (1883-1956) can also discover an oil on canvas "Jeune fille" signed and dated 1948 that comes from the Edgardo Acosta Gallery in Beverly Hills. Another major painter, Bernard BUFFET (1928-1999) will also be present with an oil on isorel "Rue de Village, 70", signed and dated 70 down in the center.

After the success of the bronze work "Le cercle" of Bruno Romeda (1933-2017) sold 100400 € by Jean-Pierre Besch last August on an estimate of 19000/22000€, 3 sculptures of the artist will also be scattered, next December 30th. Made in bronze, these 3 works testify by their geometric shapes (circle and triangle), of the very personal approach of the artist who chooses to redefine the use of space with monumental sculptures, creating a new dynamic.

Other works include Arman, Atlan, Braque, Chabaud, Domergue, Hilaire, Lhôte, Luce, Montezin, Othon-Friez, Signac, Volti and many others. This year, the Decorative Arts will be well represented with a beautiful set of French glassware including Daum, Gallé and Lalique.

Important diamonds, signed & artists' jewels, colored stones and gold coins including an elegant "ribbon" bracelet from Sterlé (sold on December 31st at 2 pm) and a beautiful set of modern watches and collections, pens & lighters, Swatch collector (sold on December 30 at 6 pm) will complete this set.
