Lincoln Continental, an American pride - La Gazette Drouot

Lincoln Continental Convertible 1947
Lincoln Continental Convertible 1947

Alongside a 1949 Desoto Convertible, estimated 22000/27000€, and a Ford Fairline 1956 19000/23000€, this Lincoln Continental Convertible, launched on January 1st, 1947, will be paraded under the colours of America. The brand with the star is emblematic of the world of motoring in the United States. Founded in 1917 by Henry Leland, the father of Cadillac, it was finally bought out five years later by Henry Ford, who turned it into his luxury division, even becoming a major player on the American market. In 1939, it even became the official supplier to the White House. It was his son Edsel who inaugurated the first Lincoln Continental in 1938, designed by Eugène Gregorie, initially for his personal use.

But he soon put this elegant convertible into production, with its very long bonnet, V12 engine and characteristic spare wheel attached to the small boot at the rear. Long, low and sleek, the Lincoln Continental became one of America's favourite cars. The first generation, to which our model belongs, was produced from 1939 to 1948 in just over five thousand units. After the war, the car was slightly redesigned, with a new grille and walnut interior. No fewer than ten generations of the Lincoln Continental were produced up to 2020 : an extraordinary longevity in the car world !
