Press release - Summer sales from August 13 to 16, 2021

François-Xavier LALANNE
François-Xavier LALANNE
Rhinocéros bleu, 1981

Faithful to his reputation for eclecticism and quality, Maître Jean-Pierre Besch will propose on Sunday August 15th at 2:30 pm a beautiful selection of paintings from the impressionists to the contemporaries but also sculptures, ceramics, decorative arts of the 20th century and old paintings. An appointment during which will be presented a set of works from renowned artists. And among them: Bernard Buffet (1928-1999).

A world-renowned painter and sculptor, Buffet is not only one of the most prolific artists of the 20th century, but also, unquestionably, one of the most famous representatives of the expressionist movement. An artistic movement to which he brought his inimitable style. His signature? Large black lines that tirelessly mark the contours of his subjects, giving his paintings a dark, mysterious and sometimes even melancholic side as shown in the oil on canvas "Fruit Basket" signed, dated 1957 in the upper middle; An approach to pictorial art far from that of the great classical masters such as David, Gericault or Courbet, and yet the artist claimed to be.

Fan of bright colors, Jean Dufy (1888-1964) shows a marked preference for blue, as evidenced by "Stockholm, the Port" (circa 1953-1954), oil on canvas signed lower left and these "Carriages and Riders in the Bois de Boulogne" (circa 1950), oil on canvas signed lower right, two compositions where, in the purest Fauvist style, the artist depicts stylized characters whose movements seem to give a sense of life to his paintings.

Considered one of the precursors of Impressionism, Félix Ziem (1821-1911) remains particularly famous for his seascapes and especially his representations of Venice and Constantinople. Themes that this painter, attached to the Orientalist movement, is particularly fond of, as evidenced by "Venice, the Doge's Palace", oil on canvas signed on the lower left.

Like Jean Dufy, Camille Corot (1796-1875) was a realist painter who was trained by Achille Etna Michallon, a landscape artist who passed on to him his taste for compositions painted in the open air. His paintings, with their subtle and delicate brushstrokes, were intended above all to be faithful reproductions of reality, such as these "Three Characters in the Swamp" (circa 1865-1870), an oil on canvas signed in the lower right corner. An approach to pictorial art that will push the artist to be one of the first to paint in this way, especially around Barbizon and to transmit his knowledge within the School of the same name that he will contribute to found.

Member of the École de Paris, Moïse Kisling (1891-1953) was a painter particularly renowned for his female nudes and portraits - mainly of women - in which he sought to reproduce the softness of the features as well as to capture the expression of the gaze, as in "Portrait of Mrs Jone Allison Barnes", 1944, oil on canvas signed, dated and dedicated in the lower right-hand corner. A major artist of this movement who would become a fixture in the Montparnasse artistic community.

François-Xavier Lalanne (1927-2008), a major artist of the 20th century, is particularly renowned for his animal sculptures. An exceptional bestiary ranging from his famous sheep to wilder and even exotic animals such as the rhinoceros, which the artist likes to portray in a variety of guises, according to his aspirations, such as this "Blue Rhinoceros", a bronze with a blue enamelled patina signed with the monogram, dated 1981 and numbered.

These are the main artists whose works Maître Besch will soon present. Other renowned painters and sculptors such as Robert Combas (b. 1957), Charles Camoin (1879-1965), Lumen Portengen (1609-1649), Patrick Caufield (1936-2005), David Hockney (b. 1937), Richard Orlinski (b. 1966), Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997), as well as old paintings will also be on offer.

This event will be preceded on August 13 and 14 at 11am and 2pm by a sale of fine wines and rare spirits, including a Carré d'As 2000 with 8 magnums, and followed on 16 August at 2 pm by a sale of fine jewellery, signed jewellery, diamonds, coloured stones and prestigious watches. Among the major pieces of this sale, an elegant Art Deco brooch in platinum with a geometrical design and an important jade carved with floral decoration, a gift from the Chinese delegation to the Economic Counsellor at the French Embassy, at the time of the French Concession in Shanghai, around 1930, should be noted. Prestigious signatures such as Bulgari, Cartier, Mauboussin, Chopard, among others, will complete this set.
