André Lankoy (1902-1976)
André Lankoy (1902-1976)
Clair comme le jour

From December 27th to 31st, Maître Jean-Pierre Besch will be organising five prestige auctions during his traditional end-of-year event, which promises to be particularly attractive, with three days of high-quality sales devoted to the dispersal of several magnificent private French and foreign cellars on December 27th, 28th and 29th with a total of around 2,400 lots, including several assorted cases from the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti estimated at between 45 000€ and 80 000€ (Expert Pascal Kuzniewski).

On December 30th, some of the undisputed masters of the main artistic currents of the 20th century, including Bernard Buffet (1928-1999), will also be presented at the Hôtel Martinez in Cannes. His black and angular features, his deliberately reduced colour palette earned this painter, who knew from the outset how to free himself from any outside influence, public recognition very early on. This success is due to the synthesis he achieves between modern pictorial forms and traditional subjects, as shown in the oil on canvas "Marée basse, 1967" signed and dated in the upper centre. A certificate from the Galerie Maurice Garnier will be given to the buyer.

Influenced by Fauvism but also by Impressionism and Cubism, Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) appreciated the more intense colours. His preference was often for the use of an intense blue, as illustrated by this "Landscape in Deauville", gouache signed lower right, dated 1929-1930. This work shows a festive atmosphere by the sea, one of the themes dear to this painter, considered to be one of the most important French artists of the 20th century.

Félix Ziem (1821-1911) invites us to "Venice, landing stage of the Ducal Palace, 1880". Among Provençal artists, he is one of those whose work has been widely admired beyond the borders of the South.

Another painter, and not the least, André Lanskoy (1902-1976) will also be represented at this auction. Lanskoy's work is atypical. Born in Moscow in 1902, he studied in St Petersburg and then in Kiev before moving to Paris in 1921. After a long figurative period, he turned to abstraction, choosing to redefine the use of space and colour, thus creating a new dynamic. The form and content of the oil on canvas "Moonlight", signed in the lower right-hand corner, is largely identified with the abstract art movement to which he belonged from 1938 onwards.

Cubism will also be represented through this oil on canvas "Roussillon, 1939" by André LHOTE (1885-1962). An art theorist, he joined this movement in 1912 and set himself the objective of inscribing modernity in the continuity of tradition, in contrast to Braque and Picasso, who were more inclined to break with the past. Witness this oil on canvas signed at the bottom left and entitled "Roussillon, 1939". Remarkable teacher, André Lhote passed on his knowledge to many students, some of whom became famous.

A renowned sculptor, César (1921-1998) belongs to the New Realist movement. An artistic movement that opposes abstract painting and advocates a return to objective reality. Compressions, expansions, human or animal prints, such as this welded bronze print with a brown patina "Césarine, 1987" with the signature of the founder Bocquel. César experiments and dares everything! A self-confessed autodidact, the artist, who in his early days turned to metal, stone not being in his means, is today exhibited in the greatest museums in the world.

Works by Eugène BOUDIN (1828-1898), Léonard FOUJITA (1886-1968), Léopold SURVAGE (1879-1968), Gustave Adolphe MOSSA, Robert RAUSCHENBERG (1925-2008) and others will complete this collection

This prestige auction will be followed on December 31st at 10.30 am and 1.30 pm by a sale of important diamonds, high jewellery, signed jewellery and prestige watches (Expert Edouard DeGaro). Amongst the major pieces, it is worth noting an important solitaire weighing 11.88 carats in L colour and VS2 clarity with its HRD certificate (120 000€/180 000€) or an exceptional platinum ring attributed to the House of HARRY WINSTON, made by the Jacques Timey workshop, holding an important emerald cut diamond of 5,80 carats in colour.
