This summer, Jean-Pierre Besch (Besch Cannes Auction) invited art lovers and collectors to one of the three exceptional events he traditionally organizes throughout the year at the Hôtel Martinez, with an eclectic array of works that once again aroused keen interest among international collectors. Among the highlights was a FERRARI 599 GTB FIORANO, sold for 114300€ on Thursday August 15th (Lot 1). Introduced in 2006, this model went on sale in 2002. The Fiorano is a “Grand Tourisme Berlinette” (GTB), Ferrari's term for a two-seater sports car. This car benefits from the expertise of one of the world's most prestigious manufacturers, and possesses all the brand's distinctive qualities : elegance, responsiveness and power.
In the field of painting, André LANKOY (1902-1976) is particularly noteworthy for his atypical work. Born in Moscow in 1902, he studied in St. Petersburg and Kiev before moving to Paris in 1921. After a long figurative period, he turned to abstraction, choosing to redefine the use of space and color, thus creating a new dynamic. By its form and content, the oil on canvas “Clair de lune”, signed lower right, is largely identified with the abstract art movement to which he adhered from 1938 onwards (sold for 140970€ out of an estimate of 60/80000€ - Lot 110).
In a decidedly different style, an oil on canvas “Etaples, marée basse” by Eugène BOUDIN (1824-1898) was also presented. Considered one of Normandy's greatest painters and a precursor of Impressionism, Boudin's interpretation of nature is always admirably balanced, as illustrated by this canvas dated 1880 (sold for 57150€ - Lot 147).
The canvas “Hommage à Mozart” by Raoul DUFY (1877-1953) fetched 91440€ (Lot 164). Its provenance is remarkable, since the current owner's mother, Madame Raymonde M., was Émilienne and Raoul Dufy's housekeeper in the 1940s, when the artist couple lived at their studio in Impasse de Galma, Paris. One of Raymonde's two sons, Jean Claude, was Émilienne Dufy's godson. In the late 1950s, Émilienne, having lost her husband and living in the Villa Guelma in the Cimiez district of Nice, asked Raymonde M. and her family to join her.
The sale also included an exceptional study notebook by Claude MONET (1840-1926). From Claude Monet's private collection, it included fourteen remarkable drawings and sketches, on detachable 23 x 31 cm sheets (sold 95885€ - Lot 119). These works had been kept in the family until the present day.
Léopold SURVAGE (1879-1968), founder of the Cubist pictorial movement “Section d'or” with Albert Gleizes, Archipenko and Braque, was present with an oil on panel “La danse,7/11/403 signed and dated lower right (sold 33655€ - lot 212).
A very fine set of glassware by Daum and Emile Gallé (1846-1904) rounded off the ensemble, including a remarkable tubular vase with swollen body in brilliant obscure dominant glass “Grands feuillages chargés de brumes de secret” (sold 10160€ - Lot 288).
This event was preceded on Tuesday August 13th and Wednesday August 14th by a sale of fine wines and rare spirits (Expert Pascal KUZNIEWSKI). Among the numerous lots from the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, 1 assortment of 14 bottles from the 2005 vintage (sold for 65720€ - Lot 603) was the most notable among the 120 bottles and magnums on sale. Also in Burgundy, rare and confidential vintages from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, including Romanée 2008 (sold for 3220€). Bordeaux's grands crus classés were also on display, in cases and individually (Petrus, Le Pin, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Latour, Margaux, Cheval Blanc, Haut-Brion, Yquem...).
This was followed the next day by another sale of important diamonds, Haute Joaillerie & bijoux signés and prestige watches (Expert Edouard DE GARO). CARTIER was in the spotlight with a remarkable collection that came from an old family in Nice, including a bracelet with a side opening, the lower part like a tubular handle hooking onto the important platinum and gold leaf motif embellished with turquoise enhanced by approx. 3 carats of brilliant-cut diamonds and set with 3 large, vivid amethysts (sold for 82550€ - Lot 178). A pair of late Art Deco lapel clips in platinum and gold, each stylizing a 5-petal flower entirely set with baguette and european-cut diamonds, bringing the total to approx. 18 carats (sold 41900€ - Lot 179).
