Tsuguharu FOUJITA (1886-1968)
Tsuguharu FOUJITA (1886-1968)
Sold for 133000€

As every year for more than fifteen years, the summer sales organised by Besch Cannes Auction House, from August 13th to 16th, took place in the prestigious Hôtel Martinez, a reference of luxury and excellence on the Croisette in Cannes. This 2022 edition honours the most representative artists of some of the main artistic trends of the 20th century. And among them, Tsuguharu FOUJITA (1886-1968) who embodies a transition between East and West. Considered as the master of the line, he is at the origin of the "nyuhakushoku" technique, this chalky white which catches the light and which has contributed so much to his fame all over the world. Witness this "Young Woman with a Veil, circa 1950", gouache, watercolour, Indian ink on paper covered with gold leaf, signed lower left, which fetched 133000€ out of an estimate of 50/70000€ - lot 113

Bright colours and sharp lines, subjects seemingly taken from ancient or mythological scenes, cartoons or dreamlike worlds : such is the universe of Robert Combas (born in 1957), co-founder and leader in Europe of free figuration ; an artistic movement where creative freedom is paramount. Using every inch of his painting, he fills it with characters whose movements seem to give life to the canvas. Creatures whose gaze occupies a central place in his work, so much so that they seem to take the viewer as a witness, as in "Love is a bunch of violets, 86", an acrylic on canvas mounted on canvas, signed and dated in the upper middle, which fetched 106700€ out of an estimate of 30000/50000€ - lot 231.

In a decidedly different style, an oil on canvas by Eugène BOUDIN (1824-1898) was also presented. Considered one of the greatest Norman painters and one of the precursors of Impressionism, Boudin interprets nature in compositions that are always admirably balanced, as illustrated by this oil on panel "Marine, Sunset, circa 1885-90" (sold for 43900€ - lot 82).

The price was 48950€ for an acrylic on velvet paper "Untitled" by Sam Francis (1923-1994) - lot 145, 35150€ for an oil on canvas "The Telephone" 1949-1950 by Oscar Dominguez (1906-1957) - lot 144, 26350€ for an oil on panel "Venice, Elegant Women near the French Gardens, circa 1870, by Felix Ziem (1821-1911) - lot 76, 33885€ for an oil on paper pasted on canvas "Persimmon Picking, 1908" by André Lhote (1885-1962) - lot 98, 21335€ for a watercolour and gouache "Les grandes eaux de Versailles pour la piscine du paquebot Normandie (non réalisé) 1935 by Raoul Dufy (1977-1953) - lot 120, 27000€ for a watercolour enhanced with a pen "Saint-Tropez, le bois des pins, vers 1894" by Paul Signac (1863-1935) - lot 151 and 27600€ for the pastel "Le bassin du jardin du Luxembourg" by Albert Marquet (1875-1947) - lot 164

Works by the painter and engraver Charles Camoin (1879-1965) were also on display, including the oil on canvas "La Charrette sur la route de Pinel, circa 1940-42" (sold for 32900€ - lot 140), the oil on canvas "Le maquis, 1908" (sold for 30100€ - lot 142), and the oil on canvas signed in the lower right-hand corner of the room "Bord de rivière" (sold for 35800€ - lot 143).

Coming from a private collection of an enthusiast, two exceptional cabriolets completed this set with a JAGUAR TYPE E PHASE III CABRIOLET V12 5,3L (sold 82850€ - lot 2) and an ALFA ROMEO GIULIA SPIDER 1600, Type : 10123 (sold 61500€ - lot 1).
