Jean-Pierre Besch (Besch Cannes Auction) is inviting art lovers and collectors to one of the three exceptional auctions he traditionally organises at the Hôtel Martinez this summer, featuring an eclectic array of works. On August 15th, one of the highlights will be a FERRARI 599 GTB FIORANO. First produced in 2006, this model went on sale in 2002. The Fiorano is a ‘Grand Tourisme Berlinette’ (GTB), which Ferrari calls a two-seater sports car. This car benefits from the expertise of one of the world's most prestigious manufacturers and possesses all the brand's distinctive features : elegance, responsiveness and power (120000/150000€).
The August auction promises to delight many collectors once again, with a number of artists represented, including Georges ROUAULT (1871-1958). Considered as an Expressionist, the painter was a fervent advocate of Fauvism. His mastery of colour made him a world-renowned artist, particularly in Japan and Korea, where he is considered one of the most important religious painters of the 20th century. ‘Rosalta, 1949-1956’, oil and ink on paper mounted on canvas, is a testament to his talent. The canvas bears the stamp of the Georges Rouault studio and the signature ‘Isabelle Rouault’, the artist's daughter. This work, which has remained in the family to this day, is characteristic of the last period with its many materials and colours (40000/50000€).
Marie MELA MUTER (1876-1967), pseudonym of Maria Melania Klingsland, belonged to the naturalist movement. Born on April 26th, 1876 in Warsaw, Poland, she became an important member of the Ecole de Paris and was noticed by the art dealer Ambroise Vollard. Influenced by Symbolism, she then turned to expressionist art, favouring bright or light colours, giving light and cheerfulness to her compositions, as shown by her oil on canvas ‘Fishermen in the port of Collioure’, signed lower right (70000/80000€).
Founder of Cubism, precursor of Surrealism and considered as one of the greatest painters of the 20th century, Pablo PICASSO (1881-1973) made his mark in a number of disciplines. Painting, etching, drawing, sculpture and lithography, as well as enamel, ceramics and goldsmiths, are just some of the fields in which Picasso reigned supreme throughout his life, as illustrated by this ‘horloge à la langue’, a hand-embossed silver plate signed and numbered 17/20 on the back (26000/30000€).
Léopold SURVAGE (1879-1968), founder of the cubist pictorial movement ‘Section d'or’ with Albert Gleizes, Archipenko and Braque will also be represented with an oil on canvas ‘La marchande de poisson, 1938’ signed and dated lower right. Works by Maurice de Vlaminck (1876-1958), André Derain (1880-1954), Maurice Utrillo (1883-1955), Antoni Tapies (1923-2012), Jacques Monory (1924-2018), Gérard Schlosser (1931-2022) and Keith Haring (1958-1990) will also be on show. The exhibition will also feature a fine collection of glassware by Daum** and Emile Gallé** (1846-1904), including a remarkable tubular vase with a swollen body in obscure dominant lustre glass entitled ‘Grands feuillages chargés de brumes de secret’ (‘Large foliage laden with mists of secrecy’).
The auction will be preceded on August Tuesday 13th and Wednesday 14th by a sale of fine wines and rare spirits (Expert Pascal KUZNIEWSKI). Among the many lots from the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, we should mention above all the assorted cases of 14 bottles from the 2003 (estimate 35000/45000€) and 2005 (estimate 48000/60000€) vintages among the 120 bottles and magnums on offer. Also in Burgundy, rare and confidential vintages from the Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair will be on show, including Romanée 2008 vintage at 2500/3500€ each. The great classified growths of Bordeaux will also be on show, in cases and individually (Petrus, Le Pin, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Latour, Margaux, Cheval Blanc, Haut-Brion, Yquem...).
This will be followed the next day by another sale of important diamonds, Haute Joaillerie & signed jewellery and prestige watches (Expert Edouard DE GARO). CARTIER will take pride of place with a remarkable collection from an old family in Nice, including a pair of late Art Deco lapel clips in platinum and gold, each stylising a 5-petal flower entirely set with baguette and old-cut diamonds, bringing the total to around 18 carats (30000/50000€). Also of note is an exceptional platinum ring holding a large rectangular cut emerald weighing 18,52 carats set with 24 brilliant-cut diamonds of excellent quality totalling 12,10 carats (French work - 140000/180000€).
