GRAFF Diamond of 9,32 cts
GRAFF Diamond of 9,32 cts
Sold : 150600€

Besch Cannes Auction organised its traditional summer sales from 14 to 16 August at Palm Beach Cannes, which attracted a great deal of interest from international collectors. On Saturday, August 15, Me Jean-Pierre Besch proposed a new and beautiful selection of works of art. And among them, several paintings by Bernard Buffet (1928-1999), painter with a style recognizable among all who favors marked contrasts with his famous black features, obeying no rule except his own. An instinctive and nervous painting that ranks him among the most talented artists of his time, as shown in Les «Fleurs sur fond vert» (sold 97900€ - lot 228), oil on canvas signed at the bottom left and dated 1998 at the bottom right. Also realized by Bernard Buffet, the «Environs de Cher, le chêne vert en automne, Parc du château de Vieille-Ville, 1975» (sold 84100€ - lot 193), oil on canvas signed at the top right is particularly interesting because of its quite unusual workmanship in the artist. A delicate painting whose curved lines are reminiscent of the style of the classical painters to whom he liked to refer. We also mention the oil on canvas «Bois de Saint Loup, near Brenac, the small bridge of the Moulin de Cressac, 1975) which obtained 72790€ (lot 272) and the oil on isorel «Impatients dans un pot, 1992» (sold 56475€ - lot 147)

Favouring landscape representations, Jan Van Goyen (1596-1656) inscribed his name in the Golden Age of Dutch painting. Baroque-style canvases in which the sky - often partially obscured by clouds - occupies a large place, and which gives the canvas a feeling of magnitude as shown by «the river estuary with boats sailing and fishermen», parquet panel, monogrammed and dated at the bottom right which flew to 106675€ out of an estimate of 50000/60000€ (lot 351).

Considered as a post-impressionist, Henri Lebasque (1865-1937) realized paintings of a great freshness where the pastel colors highlight the landscapes, (especially the countryside), but also the banks of rivers and sea that he loves. Attentive observer of the simple moments of life, his canvases reflect a feeling of sweetness to which women, - a subject he particularly appreciates - are not strangers, as in this "Veranda on the beach of Cannes or the beach bar", oil on canvas signed at the bottom left, which was acquired for an amount of 33885€ (lot 234). The oil on canvas signed in bottom left «Girls in the clearing» was sold 51455€ (lot 173).

Charles Camoin (1879-1965), who was also a fan of outdoor painting, received a classical education (he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris and, as Gustave Moreau had advised him, trained to copy the great masters of the Louvre), before being influenced by Matisse and Marquet and adhering to fauvism. A painter who prefers softer shades than many other fauves and gives a special interest to the harmony of the painting as shown in this «Mas, environs de Saint Tropez», oil on canvas signed at the bottom left (sold 37650€ - lot 245).

It cost 55220€ for the oil on the panel ofEugène Boudin (1824-1898) «Anvers, Trois-Mats à quai, 1871», signed, titled and dated at the bottom right (lot 183), 37650€ for the oil on canvas «Jeune fille, 1948» of Marie Laurencin (1883-1956) (lot 112) and 58985€ for the sculpture «Bonbon marbre blanc, 2015» by Laurence Jenkell, born in 1965 (lot 279) and 53965€ for a drawing «La vierge à l'enfant» of the Flemish school around 1600, entourage of Pietro Candido (1548-1628) (lot 355). The Decorative Arts were particularly well represented with a perfume bottle «Fougères», rare model of René Lalique in white glass that was sold 26355€ (lot 361).

Also noteworthy is the sale of luxury leather goods and fashion accessories, on Sunday 16 August at 1.30 pm, with a Kelly 32 cm Hermès Paris bag made in France, 1985 (sold 10050€ - lot 10) and a Louis Vuitton mail case in monogram canvas painted with stencil (sold at 10920€ - lot 18).

Let us also mention the sale of watches of collection which took place at 8pm with notably a watch Audemard Piguet Jules Audemars Tourbillon (Sold 30120€ - lot 482).

The auction house also organized on August Sunday 16 a sale of high jewelry and diamonds (90% of the lots have been sold) with, among them, two jewels signed GRAFF, an exceptional radiant diamond of Fancy Intense Yellow colour weighing 9,32 cts of SI1 clarity mounted on a ring in platinum and gold (sold 150600€ - lot 241) and a pendant in platinum and gold holding a Fancy Light Yellow diamond weighing 4,46 cts (vendu 26355€). Let’s also mention a superb dome-shaped ring signed Van Cleef & Arpels, one of the great names of the world jewelry whose incomparable know-how remains a reference to no other (sold 26350€ - lot 255).

Tribute to Jean MARAIS - Collection of Mr Jo PASQUALI, heir to the artist

A sacred monster of the seventh art, Jean Marais (1913-1998) has, during his more than sixty years of career, played in nearly a hundred films and shot under the direction of the greatest. From Sacha Guitry («Napoléon», «Si Versailles m'était conté...») to Jean Renoir («Helena et les hommes») by way of his friend and mentor Jean Cocteau who will launch his career and direct him on works as mythical as «La belle et la bête», «L'aigle à deux têtes» or «Orpheus», he will embody, for several generations, the eternal masculine, thus becoming one of the most emblematic French actors of the twentieth century.
