Estimate : 140000/160000€

This end of the year 2020 looks particularly attractive with the 3 days of sales of rare & fine wines, Champagnes, Chartreuses & Spirits (on December 27th at 2pm , 28 and 29 December at 10.30am and 2pm). Three days of high quality sales dedicated to the dispersion of several magnificent private cellars of great amateurs and cellars of prestigious starred restaurants.

Since 1989, the sale of December 30 (2.30 pm) is dedicated to painting and sculpture “Modern Paintings, Contemporary Art and Art of the Far East”, thus travelling various artistic currents with notably Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) who belongs to the group of Nabis, an avant-garde postimpressionist artistic movement that openly opposes the pictorial norms in force between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Considered one of the greatest colourists of the twentieth century by the richness of his palette, he also possesses a perfect mastery of light as illustrated by the «Table in a garden», oil on canvas dated 1908, signed at the bottom right and coming in particular from Ambroise Vollard and Galerie Bernheim-Jeune, Paris (140000/160000€).

A world-renowned artist, Bruno Romeda (1933-2017) remains one of the undisputed masters of parallelism and geometry. Adept of simple geometric shapes, of plays of shadow and light and the search for a feeling of balance in his creations, the artist favors the harmony of proportions as well as the noble material that is bronze as evidenced by the four works presented on the occasion of this sale («the Square», bronze of 1972, measuring 150 cm high (around 25000€), «the Rectangle», bronze of a height of 115 cm (around 12000€) «Le Parallélépipède», titled «Perspective cubique», bronze dated 1972 and measuring 161 cm in height (around 30000€) and «La Colonne», bronze of 1976 measuring 188 cm, (around 6000€).

Influenced by various currents such as postimpressionism, Fauvism or even cubism, Joan Miro (1893-1983) appreciates as much the bright colors as the extreme sobriety as evidenced by this ink on paper «Sans titre», dated 1953 and signed in bottom right (78000€/80000€). A work that is not without recalling, by its minimalist style and its apparent spontaneity, certain childish drawings; creations which the artist is willingly inspired.

Other artists and not least, Kisling and Dubuffet, will also be represented in this sale. A worthy representative of the École de Paris, Moïse Kisling (1891-1953) is essentially known for his depictions of naked women such as this «Model», oil on canvas signed at the bottom right (40000€/45000€). These canvases, thanks to which he pays tribute to feminine beauty but which can also address other themes as shown in the «Nature morte au bouquet», oil on canvas signed at the bottom right (30000€/35000€).

Fan of Art Brut, Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) remains the most contested but also the most admired French artist of the post-war period. A particular approach to pictorial art that leads him to make complex compositions sometimes reminiscent of a set of collages. A choice claimed by this self-taught for whom «The painting of the post-war period is (indeed) a reaction against the daring of the beginning of the century». Witness, this «Memorable Facts II», color silkscreen on arches paper dated 1978 and estimated 15000€/20000€.

Art of the Far East will be particularly well represented with an important sculpture representing Guandi, the God of War in armor, from the Ming (China) period in polychrome terracotta and lead glazes.

The sale of December 31 at 2pm will include a whole set of sumptuous jewels, diamonds, signed jewels and coloured stones. The diamonds will be particularly honored with an exceptional pear diamond weighing 2.21 carats of color Fancy light purplish pink of clarity SL1 (100000€/150000€), an exceptional natural diamond of color Fancy Yellow and purity VS2 (90000/120000€), and a superb Cartier Haute Joaillerie necklace entitled "Flocon" (50000€/70000€). Among the pieces presented on this occasion, it should also be noted a remarkable selection of vintage and contemporary jewelry that belonged to Rosita Diaz Gimeno, one of the great stars of the Spanish cinema of the 30s, including this Cartier foliage brooch (around 2500€) or this brooch Bouffon du Roi Van Cleef & Arpels (around 2500€). A festive program from December 27 to 31, 2020 in Cannes!

The discovery of monumental bronzes in a park in Cannes

The universe of Bruno ROMEDA

Original collection of a couple of friends of the artist

On the occasion of our traditional prestigious sales at the end of the year, Maître Jean-Pierre BESCH will present in the lounges of the Hotel Martinez in Cannes a new collection of four sculptures by Bruno ROMEDA from a Cannes property of a couple of friends of the artist.

During our sale on August 15, 2019, a bronze Circle of 2009 was sold at a record price of 100400€. In December of the same year, three monumental works from the former property of jazzman Bobby SHORT had been awarded for a total amount of 180000€.

After his death three years ago, Bruno ROMEDA will once again be present in Cannes on December 30 at our prestigious end-of-year sale, with four works revealing simple geometric forms, characteristic of the work of the Italian artist.

Square, rectangle, parallelepiped and column

This collection is new in several ways :

  • Unique in its diversity, all the geometric language of ROMEDA is present in this collection:

*le Carré, bronze from 1972, 150 cm high, estimated at 25000€

*the Rectangle, bronze with a height of 115 cm, estimated at 12000€

These two sculptures delimit the spaces they occupy, displaying clean lines with voluntary irregularities.

*The Parallelepiped, titled «Perspective cubique», bronze dated 1972 and measuring 161 cm in height, estimated at 30000€, chosen by the artist, to increase his visual language.

*La Colonne, bronze from 1976 measuring 188 cm, estimated at 6000€, high, narrow, is an echo of the green arrows of cypresses.

  • New in origin, history and seniority,

Mr and Mrs G., friends of Bruno ROMEDA, who lived in Grasse since 1956, with his companion, the American architect and visual artist, Robert COURTRIGHT, acquired these works directly from the artist, all in the 1970s.

A collage of COURTRIGHT from the same source will be presented for sale.

Wishing to highlight the place where his works are, close to the collectors, ROMEDA himself placed his sculptures in the park. Thus our Perspective Cubique, bronze of 1972, «frames» Cannes on the surrounding sea.
